Opéra Magnolia - où fleurissent les idées audacieuses

Formerly Musique 3 Femmes

Where bold ideas flower...

An opera company for today, Opéra Magnolia is committed to growing the art form by opening space for new stories, voices, and creative territory, while fostering gender-diverse leadership in opera. Until 2022, M3F facilitated a biennial $50,000 award, the Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes, which supported the creation of 11 new chamber operas by emerging female identifying Canadian composers and librettists through seed funding, mentorship, and work development opportunities.

In 2025, Opéra Magnolia founded the Opera Creation Forum in collaboration with Opéra de Montréal. Directed by Luna Pearl Woolf, he OCF is an intensive, hands-on program for emerging opera composers and librettists, focused on the collaborative development of new works. Through mentorship, workshops, and public readings, participants gain practical experience and professional guidance in bringing new opera to life.

Opéra Magnolia's artistic partners include Opéra de Montréal, Pacific Opera Victoria, Le Vivier, FIFA, Salle Bourgie, SMCQ, Chants Libres, Paramirabo, Earth World Collaborative, Festival Classica, Festival d'Opéra de Québec, ufaFabrik Kulturzentrum (Berlin), Opera America and the Association for Opera in Canada.

Notable productions by Opéra Magnolia (formerly Musique 3 Femmes) include L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi, an opera that has been described as “exactly what opera needs… bold, contemporary, poetic, political, feminist, theatrical, well-executed, and unafraid of traditionalists.” Opéra Magnolia first produced the work in Berlin with ufaFabrik Kulturzentrum, and it continues its trajectory with new productions in 2026 in partnership with Festival Classica and Festival d’Opéra de Québec. Other notable projects include L’écoute du perdu by Keiko Devaux, produced with Paramirabo and presented by Le Vivier at Fonderie Darling (2023); Plaything by Anna Pidgorna and Maria Reva, produced with ufaFabrik in Berlin and later presented by Opera McGill as part of the New Works Binge Fest (2022); and SOLO, presented at the Watershed Festival and at Re:Naissance.

Opéra Magnolia’s digital productions include film adaptations of  Vanishing Point, The Chair, Justine et les machines, and Love Songs (featuring four Canadian composers), created in partnership with Earth World Collaborative. Vanishing Point was premiered at Montreal's Festival International du Film sur l’Art. All  filmed opera projects were presented as part of Opéra Magnolia's  digital opera festival at Cinéma Moderne in March 2024.

Alongside their work in fostering the next generation of composers and librettists, OMagnolia engages in creation workshops which focus on the training of young artists and performers in universities across Canada. Made possible by the generous support of the Azrieli Foundation, Opéra Magnolia’s workshops serve a dynamic collaborative space between young artists and established professionals in the field of creation. To date, their workshops have been presented at 11 universities/schools across Canada in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland.
